Azurite Crystal

$33.99

A natural azurite crystal with rich, deep-blue color characteristic of this copper carbonate mineral; ruler shown for scale.

Azurite is a copper carbonate hydroxide (Cu₃(CO₃)₂(OH)₂) that forms as a secondary mineral in the oxidized upper zones of copper ore deposits, where copper-bearing minerals react with carbonate-rich water near the surface. Its rich, deep-blue color is distinctive enough that azurite has been used historically as a blue pigment. Over time, in humid conditions, azurite can slowly convert to malachite (a related green copper mineral) as its chemistry shifts — so a well-preserved, richly blue azurite specimen like this one is worth keeping somewhere reasonably dry and stable to slow that natural process.

At Mohs hardness 3.5–4, azurite is softer than quartz and should be handled with a bit more care, cleaned with only a soft, dry cloth. The included ruler photo (set to 1 inch) shows this is a decent-size specimen, not a small chip.

A striking blue mineral for any collection, with genuine geological rarity value given how much azurite naturally converts to malachite before ever reaching a collector’s shelf.

The story: Azurite forms in the oxidized zone above copper ore deposits, where copper-rich groundwater reacts with carbonate rock. It commonly grows alongside — and slowly converts into — malachite, since the two minerals share the same copper source and differ mainly by water content.

Why collectors chase it: It’s one of the most intensely blue minerals in nature; ‘azurite blue’ was mined and ground as a pigment long before any synthetic alternative existed.

Care: Soft and copper-based — keep it away from acids (it will react) and prolonged heat or sun, which can push it toward converting to malachite over very long timescales. Soft-cloth clean only.
