The story: Like azurite, these form in the oxidized cap above a copper ore deposit — but from silica-rich rather than carbonate-rich groundwater. Chrysocolla on its own is often too soft and porous to hold together as a solid specimen; it needs silica (sometimes as opal) to harden and stabilize it, which is exactly what’s happened in a raw rock piece like this one.
Why collectors chase it: The saturated blue-green rivals turquoise, and because every piece is a unique mix of minerals, no two color patterns ever repeat.
Care: Soft and sometimes porous — never soak it in water or clean with chemicals; dust with a dry, soft cloth only.
