New collectors tend to make the same mistake: spending their whole budget on the biggest, showiest cluster in the case before they’ve handled enough specimens to know what they actually like. A smarter start is a handful of smaller, well-chosen pieces spread across different mineral families, since each one teaches something different about how crystals form and what makes them worth collecting. Herkimer Diamond — $12

Golden Calcite Crystal Point — $14

Calcite is one of the most common minerals on Earth, and one of the easiest to learn on, since it fizzes visibly in contact with a mild acid and reads soft on a fingernail-and-coin scratch test.
