Weston, Ohio: The Quarry Behind the Shop’s Golden Calcite

The golden calcite associated with this shop’s Ohio material traces back to a much smaller, more specific source than “Ohio” as a whole suggests: quarries around Weston, in Wood County, in the state’s northwest corner, where a particular layer of Paleozoic-era limestone and dolostone happens to host unusually well-formed calcite crystals.

Limestone country, and what fills its cavities

Northwest Ohio sits on thick beds of Silurian and Devonian-age carbonate rock, marine limestone and dolostone laid down when a shallow tropical sea covered much of the region hundreds of millions of years ago. Groundwater moving through that carbonate rock over geologic time dissolved and redeposited calcium carbonate into open vugs and fractures, producing calcite crystals that range from clear to the honey-gold color covered in our general piece on Ohio calcite, a color that in this material generally comes from trace iron oxide inclusions picked up as the crystals grew.

An industrial quarry, not a dedicated mine

Most of the calcite from this region, this specimen included, is recovered as a byproduct of active limestone and dolostone quarrying, industrial operations extracting crushed stone for construction and cement, rather than mining conducted specifically for mineral specimens. That’s a genuinely different economic story than a locality mined directly for crystals, closer to how Chihuahua’s quartz clusters come up incidentally during metal mining, specimen-grade material recovered almost by chance while the operation pursues an entirely different, much larger commercial goal.

It’s a reminder that plenty of genuinely fine mineral specimens on the market were never anyone’s primary target, they were simply too good to crush along with everything else.
