About this specimen

Amethyst is the purple variety of quartz, colored by trace iron impurities altered by natural irradiation within the earth. The Brandberg Mountain area of Namibia is one of the most celebrated amethyst localities in the world, known for crystals with unusually high clarity and gemmy transparency, and often showing more than one color zone — pale lavender fading into smoky gray-brown — within a single point, a result of changing conditions during a long, complex growth history.

This lot includes six natural points: one attractive point still attached to its original matrix, plus five loose points ranging from pale lavender to smoky amethyst, letting you see the range of color and clarity the locality is known for side by side. Points measure approximately 0.5–1″ and the matrix piece about 1.5″.

At Mohs hardness 7, these crystals are durable for regular display and handling; a soft, dry cloth keeps them clean. A strong pick for anyone collecting amethyst by locality or looking for genuine Namibian material at an accessible price point.

Inside the Amethyst

The purple in your palm is quartz plus two accidents of geology — trace iron and millions of years of natural background radiation.

The story: Amethyst forms the same way most quartz crystals do — silica-rich fluid cooling slowly inside a gas cavity in volcanic rock — except this fluid carried a trace of iron. Left alone for long enough, natural background radiation in the surrounding rock converts that iron into the color centers that give amethyst its purple, often banding from pale lilac to deep violet within a single point.

Why collectors chase it: Depth and evenness of color are what separate an ordinary piece from a great one — the deepest, most saturated purple comes from a handful of localities worldwide, and Brandberg, Namibia (the source of several pieces in this shop) is prized for sharp, gemmy double-terminated points, sometimes with smoky phantom zoning inside the same crystal.

Care: Quartz is tough (Mohs 7), but amethyst’s color itself is the delicate part: sustained direct sunlight can fade it over years, and real heat (300–400°C) permanently turns it citrine-yellow. Keep it out of a sunny windowsill for long-term display and it will hold its color indefinitely.

Amethyst: the science

  • Take away either ingredient, the iron or the radiation, and the crystal stays colorless. Both are needed for purple.
  • Amethyst’s color is heat-sensitive. At roughly 400 to 500 °C it turns yellow or orange, which is how most commercial citrine is made.
  • Long exposure to strong sunlight can slowly fade amethyst, so collectors keep their best pieces out of the window.

Questions about this piece

What is amethyst?

Amethyst is purple quartz. Its color comes from trace iron in the crystal combined with natural radiation from the surrounding rock.

Where was it found?

This lot comes from Brandberg, Namibia. We list a locality whenever it is known, because where a mineral formed is part of its story and its value.

How hard is it, and how should I care for it?

It rates 7 on the Mohs scale. Mohs 7. Display away from direct sunlight to protect the color. Rinse in lukewarm water and air dry, and avoid heat.

Is this the exact lot I will receive?

Yes. This lot was photographed as a group, and you receive the pieces shown.
