In the year 2000, miners working roughly 1,000 feet below Naica, Mexico, broke into a cavity and found selenite crystals unlike anything previously documented on Earth, translucent gypsum beams up to 39 feet long and several feet thick, growing in every direction through a chamber the size of a large room.
A one-time geological coincidence
The Cave of Crystals formed under a remarkably specific and temporary combination of conditions: a magma chamber below the cave kept the water inside it at a stable temperature around 136 degrees Fahrenheit, hot enough to dissolve large amounts of calcium sulfate but just below the threshold where gypsum, the mineral behind selenite, becomes unstable and stops forming. That precise, narrow temperature window held steady for an estimated 500,000 years, giving crystals an almost unimaginable stretch of uninterrupted growth time, the same “slow and undisturbed” logic behind exceptional crystal size everywhere, just taken to an extreme.
A discovery that couldn’t last as found
The cave had remained naturally flooded and sealed for that entire growth period, and it was only accessible at all because mine dewatering pumps drained the chamber during silver and lead extraction nearby. Once exposed to air, the crystals stopped growing and began slowly deteriorating, and the cave’s extreme heat and humidity made even brief scientific visits dangerous without specialized cooling suits, conditions researchers raced to document before mine operators eventually allowed the chamber to reflood in 2017, restoring the stable environment that had let the crystals grow undisturbed for half a million years in the first place.
It remains the most extreme known demonstration of a principle that shows up at every scale in mineralogy, from a modest quartz point to a 39-foot selenite beam: given stable conditions and enough uninterrupted time, crystals will keep growing far past what most collectors ever get to see.
