Long Island itself is not a classic in-situ petrified wood locality — the island is built from glacial outwash and moraine material left behind roughly 20,000 years ago as the last ice sheet retreated, which means pieces like this one arrived as glacially transported material, likely carried down from older fossil-wood-bearing deposits farther north or reworked from Coastal Plain sediments. Finding petrified wood on a Long Island beach or bluff is as much a story about glacial history as it is about the tree it once was.
