Beryl’s Many Colors: Emerald, Aquamarine, and Morganite Are the Same Mineral

Emerald, aquamarine, and morganite get sold in three completely different sections of a jewelry case, priced on three different scales, and marketed as though they have nothing in common. They’re the same mineral. All three are beryl, beryllium aluminum silicate, Be3Al2(SiO3)6, and the differences that separate a five-figure emerald from a modest aquamarine come down to which trace element got incorporated during crystal growth.

One formula, several colorists

Pure beryl is colorless, a variety gemologists call goshenite. Trace chromium or vanadium turns it the saturated green of emerald. Trace iron turns it aquamarine’s pale blue-green. Trace manganese turns it morganite’s soft pink. It’s the same basic mechanism behind trace-element coloring in quartz and garnet, just with a different host mineral and, in emerald’s case, unusually particular growth conditions: emerald needs chromium or vanadium in a rock chemistry that beryllium doesn’t normally coexist with, which is part of why gem-quality emerald is so much rarer and more included than aquamarine.

A hexagonal habit that rewards patience

Beryl crystallizes in the hexagonal system, typically as long six-sided prisms, and large, well-terminated crystals require slow growth in open pegmatite cavities, the same kind of unhurried mineral-rich environment that produces oversized crystals of many species. Emerald’s heavy internal fracturing, the inclusions gemologists nickname “jardin,” French for garden, is largely a byproduct of the specific high-pressure conditions chromium-bearing emerald tends to form under, conditions that are more geologically stressful than the comparatively calm pegmatites that grow clean aquamarine.

It’s a useful reminder that “which gemstone is more valuable” is rarely a question about the mineral itself. Beryl is beryl in every case, and the market gap between its varieties is really a story about which trace element is willing to show up, and under what conditions, more than it is a story about the crystal.
