Fluorite: The Mineral That Named a Scientific Phenomenon

Fluorite gave modern science one of its more useful words almost by accident. In 1852, physicist George Gabriel Stokes was studying how certain minerals glowed under invisible light and needed a name for the effect. He picked fluorite as his example material and called the glow “fluorescence,” after the mineral, not the other way around. Fluorite didn’t just demonstrate the phenomenon, it named it.

Why fluorite specifically

Fluorite is calcium fluoride, CaF2, and it forms in a huge range of colors, purple, green, blue, yellow, colorless, sometimes several colors zoned within a single crystal, largely because trace rare-earth elements and natural radiation exposure disturb its otherwise simple structure in different ways. That same structural sensitivity is what makes many fluorite specimens fluoresce strongly under ultraviolet light, some famously glowing a deep blue-violet distinct from their daylight color entirely. Soft, but ordered

Fluorite sits at a clean 4 on the Mohs scale, the reference mineral for that exact hardness point, and it breaks along perfect octahedral cleavage, four smooth planes that split a crystal into two neat pyramids joined base to base. That’s a direct result of its cubic crystal structure, atoms arranged with such regular symmetry that the mineral has almost no preferred direction to resist a clean break along those specific planes, the same underlying logic behind why different minerals cleave so differently, covered further in our cleavage versus fracture explainer.

It’s a mineral that manages to be foundational to mineralogy twice over: a reference point on the hardness scale everyone still uses, and the namesake of an optical effect that now describes everything from highlighter ink to laundry detergent brighteners, all descended from one Victorian physicist reaching for the nearest purple rock on his desk.
