Paterson, New Jersey: The Trap-Rock Quarries That Put American Minerals on the Map

Long before it was known for anything else, Paterson, New Jersey was one of the most productive mineral localities in the United States. Its 19th- and early 20th-century trap-rock quarries, cutting into the Jurassic-age basalt of the Watchung Mountains, produced specimens that ended up in museum collections around the world. One of our own pieces traces directly back to that ground.

What “Trap Rock” Actually Means

“Trap rock” isn’t a mineral name, it’s a quarrying term for dark, fine-grained volcanic rock, in this case basalt, that breaks into blocky, step-like fragments (from the Swedish “trappa,” meaning stairs). Paterson’s basalt flowed as lava roughly 200 million years ago, during the early breakup of the supercontinent Pangaea, then sat exposed and quarried for construction material for the next two centuries. The construction industry wanted the rock. Mineral collectors wanted what was inside it.

Gas Bubbles Are Where the Story Starts

As that lava cooled, trapped gas formed bubbles throughout the rock, cavities called vesicles. Over millions of years, mineral-rich groundwater moved through the basalt and slowly deposited new minerals inside those empty pockets. Paterson’s quarries turned out to be an especially rich version of that setup, producing not just stilbite but prehnite (which we cover separately in our prehnite piece), datolite, and a long list of other zeolite and associated minerals in enough quantity and quality to draw collectors from well outside New Jersey.

A Working Quarry, Not a Preserved Site

Unlike a national park or protected outcrop, Paterson’s mineral localities were active industrial quarries first. Collectors gathered specimens as a byproduct of blasting and excavation meant for building material, often trading directly with quarry workers. Many of the historically significant Paterson specimens now in institutional collections were pulled out this way, which is part of why documented, correctly-labeled Paterson material carries real weight with collectors today: the localities themselves are largely built over or inaccessible now.
