About this specimen
A mixed lot of 12 polished agate and jasper stones in warm reds, honeys, browns, and olives — including a banded agate with a crisp eye pattern, a translucent honey agate slab, red jasper, and several moss/dendritic pieces.
Agate and jasper are both microcrystalline quartz (chalcedony): agate is the translucent, often banded form, while jasper is opaque, colored by iron oxides and other impurities. Great for tumbled-stone collections, crafting, or wire wrapping. Mohs hardness about 6.5–7. Lot #87.
Agate and jasper: the science
- Chalcedony is built of microscopic quartz fibers, which make it tougher than a single large quartz crystal.
- Jasper’s reds, browns, and yellows come mostly from iron oxides mixed into the silica.
- Tumbled stones spend several weeks in a rotating barrel with progressively finer grit before a final polish.

Questions about this piece
What is agate and jasper?

How hard is it, and how should I care for it?
It rates 6.5–7 on the Mohs scale. Mohs 6.5–7 and tough. Wash with mild soapy water and dry. Store so harder stones do not scratch the polish.
Is this the exact lot I will receive?
