Hardness Isn’t the Same as Toughness

Diamond is the hardest natural material on Earth and, struck at the wrong angle with a hammer, will still shatter. That’s not a contradiction, it’s a reminder that hardness and toughness measure two completely different things, and confusing them is one of the more common mistakes in thinking about how durable a mineral actually is.

Two separate questions

Hardness, what the Mohs scale measures, is resistance to scratching, one mineral’s ability to gouge another. Toughness is resistance to breaking or chipping under impact, a completely different mechanical property that hardness tells you almost nothing about. Diamond’s rigid, tightly bonded lattice resists scratching from every direction, which is what makes it so hard, but that same rigidity means the lattice has almost no give when struck, and diamond can cleave or shatter along specific planes with a sharp, well-placed blow.

Why jade beats quartz in a fight

Jade is the clearest counterexample: at roughly 6 to 7 on the Mohs scale, it’s noticeably softer than quartz’s 7, and far softer than diamond. But jade’s interlocking mat of microscopic fibrous crystals has no single weak direction for an impact to exploit, unlike a large single quartz crystal, which is why jade resists chipping and cracking under impact better than much harder minerals, and why it became a preferred material for tools and ceremonial blades across multiple ancient cultures instead of harder, more brittle stone.

Gemologists and jewelers factor both properties in separately when recommending a stone for everyday wear, a ring stone needs enough hardness to resist scratching from daily contact but also enough toughness to survive an accidental knock against a hard surface, and a mineral that excels at one can still fail badly at the other.
