Mica is a group of sheet-silicate minerals prized for their perfect basal cleavage — the ability to split into thin, flexible sheets. This specimen has a warm golden tone, with fine dark tourmaline crystals grown through and between the mica sheets, a pairing commonly seen in granite pegmatites where both minerals crystallize from the same slowly-cooling, mineral-rich melt.
Tourmaline is a borosilicate mineral that forms elongated, striated crystals, and where it grows alongside mica the two intergrow this way, with tourmaline needles threading through the mica’s cleavage planes. Mica is soft, around 2.5-3 on the Mohs scale, so its cleavage sheets can peel or flake with rough handling — keep this one somewhere it won’t get bumped around.

Two minerals, two completely different crystal habits, grown side by side in the same pocket.
The story: Mica grows in pegmatites and metamorphic rock as thin, flexible sheets that peel apart along one perfect cleavage plane. When boron-rich fluid moves through that same pocket, black tourmaline (schorl) crystallizes right alongside — or straight through — the mica sheets, producing pieces that are really two different minerals telling one growth story.
Why collectors chase it: It’s a hands-on lesson in intergrowth: the papery gold sheen of mica next to the glassy black prisms of tourmaline, two totally different crystal structures that formed in the same few square inches of rock at the same time.
Care: Mica sheets can flake or delaminate if repeatedly flexed — handle by the edges rather than pressing on the flat faces, and keep it dry.
